Jesse Washington
The University of Central 海角社区 welcomes award-winning journalist and documentary filmmaker Jesse Washington on Thursday, Oct.聽 5, at 7:30 p.m.,聽 in the Windgate Center for Fine and Performing Arts as part of the Reynolds Performance Hall season鈥檚 2023-24 Speakers Series.
Throughout his career, Washington鈥檚 works have focused on sports, race and society. Washington gained considerable notoriety as senior writer for ESPN鈥檚 鈥淎ndscape鈥� since it launched in 2016 as 鈥淭he Undefeated.鈥� Among his award-winning pieces are 鈥淭he Waco Horror,鈥� a film about the 1916 lynching of another man named Jesse Washington; college coaches struggling with how to respond to the racial upheavals of 2020; and the mystery of the Michael Jordan statement 鈥淩epublicans by sneakers, too.鈥�
Washington鈥檚 books include 鈥淚 Came as a Shadow,鈥� the autobiography of former Georgetown University basketball coach John Thompson, which was a New York Times Notable Book of 2021 and 鈥淟ucky Me,鈥� the autobiography of sports agent Rich Paul.聽聽
Washington has been a director, writer or producer of several documentaries, including 鈥淢arch on Washington: Keepers of the Dream,鈥� which traced the connections between Black Lives Matter and the original Civil Rights Movement and 鈥淏earing Witness,鈥� a story about the teenager who filmed the murder of George Floyd. Prior to joining ESPN, he worked聽for The Associated Press and as an editor at the magazines 鈥淰ibe,鈥� 鈥淏laze鈥� and 鈥淏ounce.鈥� He is a graduate of Yale University.
