The Department of Government, Public Service, and International Studies 鈥� formerly known as the Department of Political Science 鈥� is home to the political science, public administration, and international studies degree programs at UCA.聽 Originally established in 1971, the department currently includes eleven full-time聽faculty members聽with expertise in all of the major fields of political science and public administration.聽 The department, which is in the聽College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences聽at UCA, offers on-campus and online courses during Fall and Spring semesters, as well as during the summer sessions.
The primary objective of the department鈥檚聽political science program聽is to provide students with the conceptual and analytical tools for understanding political institutions and processes in the United States and other countries, as well as global institutions and processes. The political science curriculum is designed to satisfy the needs of (1) those students choosing to major or minor in political science, public administration, international studies, or legal studies; (2) those students choosing to major or minor in other fields of study 鈥� including Environmental Science, African/African-American Studies, Cybersecurity, Cybersecurity Management,聽Latin American Studies, and Asian Studies 鈥� for which specific political science courses are either required or electives; and (3) those students who choose political science courses as a part of their UCA Core (upper-division and lower-division) requirements.
Courses offered in the political science program deal with a wide range of topics in the following major fields of political science: American government & politics, international relations, comparative politics, political theory, public policy, and public administration.聽 The department also provides students with information regarding a wide variety of聽internship opportunities, which may be done as a part of the political science degree requirements.聽 In addition to the political science program, the department is also home to the聽public administration program听补苍诲听international studies program.聽 These programs seek to prepare students for a variety of careers in governmental agencies, non-governmental organizations, and inter-governmental organizations in the U.S. and abroad.聽 The聽legal studies minor聽is also located in the department.聽 For those students interested in pursuing a career in law, the department offers聽pre-law advising.聽 The department also sponsors a variety of聽Model United Nations聽activities throughout the year.
