Program Description
Experience Japan through an interdisciplinary journey led by UCA faculty! This program connects classroom learning with real-world, hands-on exploration across four iconic Japanese cities. Discover how Japanese language, history, economics, and chemistry intersect through immersive field site visits, historic landmarks, and vibrant urban centers.
Destination Highlights:

Tokyo: Dive into Japan’s high-energy capital, balancing futuristic innovation with sacred traditions.

Kyoto: Walk through centuries of rich cultural heritage, serene shrines, and historic arts.
- Nara: Experience ancient Japanese history and local traditions in one of Japan’s original capitals.

Osaka: Explore a dynamic city famous for its bustling atmosphere, global commerce, and deep food culture.
Program Highlights & Activities:
- Akihabara: Explore Tokyo’s famous pop culture, technology, and electronics district to study modern consumer economics and media.
- Kyoto International Manga Museum: Examine Japanese visual storytelling, language arts, and cultural history.
- Meiji Jingu Shrine: Walk through one of Tokyo’s most sacred Shinto shrines to study historical architecture, spiritual traditions, and cultural practices.
- Harushika Sake Brewery: Gain hands-on insight into the traditional chemical fermentation processes, local craft economics, and regional heritage of Nara.

Faculty Leaders
Dr. Kae Hashimoto Reed
Visiting Lecturer of Japanese
Dr. Reed has extensive international experience living, teaching, and performing in Japan, Thailand, Singapore, and the United States. A native of Japan, she is especially familiar with the Kansai region, including Osaka, Kyoto, and Nara. She has also traveled and performed throughout Asia and previously led a study abroad program to Germany and Austria. Dr. Reed is passionate about music, history, and Japanese pop culture and looks forward to creating a meaningful and culturally enriching experience for UCA students.
Dr. Marsha D. Massey
Associate Professor of Chemistry & Biochemistry
Dr. Massey has traveled to Germany, Italy, Roat谩n, and Japan, and her research in inorganic chemistry focuses on transforming carbon dioxide into fuel for alternative energy. Dr. Massey is passionate about helping students understand chemistry in a global context and believes education abroad experiences, including STEM courses, are essential for preparing students to address global challenges. She is excited to help students connect their classroom learning with real-world scientific and cultural experiences abroad.
Dr. Collin Hodges
Assistant Professor of Economics
Dr. Collin Hodges teaches undergraduate and MBA courses in economics and healthcare economics. He has traveled extensively, including to Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico, Peru, England, and Scotland, and is passionate about creating international opportunities for UCA students through study abroad programs. Dr. Hodges speaks some Spanish and Japanese and enjoys learning languages, playing Go, spending time with his family, and reading books from around the world.
